Amazon Web Services (AWS) is deepening its commitment to quantum innovation with plans to establish a new quantum computing research and development center in Northern Pasadena, California. After AWS purchased a 168,000-square-foot facility for $78 million, local residents raised concerns that the property would be converted into a resource-heavy AI data center. However, AWS recently clarified to city officials that the building will be dedicated strictly to R&D. Currently in the early planning stages, the new facility will expand upon the company's existing AWS Center for Quantum Computing—developed in partnership with nearby Caltech in 2021—to further its research into fault-tolerant quantum hardware and superconducting qubits.
