Amazon is making a staggering $220 billion bet on artificial intelligence infrastructure in 2026, a move that has effectively evaporated the company's free cash flow. In an internal September meeting, AWS executives acknowledged that the AI buildout is “hugely free cash flow negative” and will likely remain so for a couple of years. Driven by a massive $496 billion AWS backlog, the company is frantically securing power, equipment, and labor—even building temporary housing for construction workers in West Texas. However, supply chain bottlenecks and power constraints mean that billions of dollars in highly anticipated Nvidia GPU servers are currently staged in intermediary warehouses, forcing Amazon to spend cash faster on uninstalled hardware while waiting for the necessary electricity and infrastructure to come online.
