When agentic AI began percolating through collaborative workspaces in 2024, many vendors positioned it as the solution to a chronic labor shortage. AI agents would supplement and then replace human employees. All through 2025, research studies found that employees were resistant to implementing generative and agentic AI in the workplace, citing concerns about AI making their jobs harder or eliminating them altogether. These concerns were not assuaged when Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff drew attention in September 2025 when he said Salesforce cut its support headcount by 4,000 because he needed “less heads” to do the same work.
