During Amazon’s recent Q2 earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy laid out a staggering new vision for Amazon Web Services (AWS), predicting the cloud division could eventually generate $1 trillion in annual revenue. Previously viewed as a business capable of producing a few hundred billion dollars, AWS is currently tracking at an annual run rate of roughly $169 billion. Jassy attributes this explosive expanded potential to the AI revolution; beyond just needing specialized chips, companies deploying AI require massive traditional cloud infrastructure to store data and support complex AI agents. With 85% of global IT spending still on-premises and AWS holding $496 billion in signed customer commitments, Amazon is confidently raising its 2026 capital expenditures to $220 billion to capture this unprecedented market shift.
