A large enterprise managing complex, milestone-driven projects needed a reliable way to calculate and maintain project timelines within Salesforce. Each project followed a structured sequence of dependent milestones, with offsets that varied by team and use case. Fiduciary Tech delivered a timeline calculation engine that automatically generated project milestone dates from a single reference point.
THE CHALLENGE
Project schedules often contained dozens and in some cases more than a hundred interdependent milestones. Teams needed the flexibility to calculate timelines either forward or backward from a critical milestone while honoring predefined dependencies and offsets. Manual date management was time-consuming, error-prone, and difficult to maintain, particularly when changes required recalculating downstream milestones without losing the original plan for reporting and comparison.
OUR SOLUTION
Fiduciary Tech designed and implemented a custom timeline calculation engine using Salesforce Apex. Teams define reusable templates that capture milestone dependencies and date offsets. When applying a template to a project, users select an anchor milestone and date through a guided, wizard-based interface.
The system automatically calculates all planned milestone dates and creates Salesforce records to store planned, forecast, and actual dates. When forecast dates change, downstream milestones are recalculated automatically while the original planned baseline remains locked—allowing teams to track variance over time without compromising reporting accuracy.
